Frequently asked questions.
1. What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic and structured style of yoga that involves synchronizing breath with a progressive series of postures. This practice builds strength, flexibility, and mental clarity. It follows a specific sequence of poses that are practiced in the same order every time.
2. Do I need to be experienced in yoga to join your class?
No experience is required! While Ashtanga is a challenging practice, beginners are always welcome. Our class will help guide you through the sequence, focusing on building strength, flexibility, and breath awareness. Modifications will be offered as needed.
3. What should I bring to class?
All you need is a yoga mat, comfortable clothes that allow for movement. If you don't have a mat, we have some available.
4. What should I expect in an Ashtanga Yoga class?
In our class, you'll begin with a short centering practice followed by the series of postures. Each movement is linked with breath, so you'll be encouraged to focus on deep, steady breathing throughout. The class can be physically demanding, but you will work at your own pace, and we’ll provide modifications as needed.
5. Is Ashtanga Yoga suitable for people with injuries or medical conditions?
Ashtanga can be physically intense, but with proper guidance, it can be adapted to suit different needs. It’s best to consult with your doctor if you have any specific injuries or health conditions before starting. Please inform me before class if you have any injuries so that modifications can be provided.
6. How often should I practice Ashtanga Yoga?
For best results, it’s recommended to practice Ashtanga Yoga 2-3 times per week. However, it's important to listen to your body and allow rest days as needed. Consistency is key to experiencing the benefits over time.
7. What is the difference between Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga?
Both styles are based on linking breath with movement, but Ashtanga follows a specific, set sequence of postures, while Vinyasa allows for more flexibility in the sequence. Ashtanga also tends to be more physically demanding due to its structured nature.
8. What if I can’t keep up with the class?
Ashtanga is a challenging practice, but remember that yoga is about your personal journey. It's completely normal to need time to build strength and flexibility. We will offer modifications to help you as you progress.
9. Will I sweat a lot during class?
Yes! Ashtanga Yoga is known for its heat-building nature, and the vigorous movement combined with breath work tends to produce sweat. It’s important to stay hydrated before and after class.
10. What should I do if I need to leave class early or take a break?
It's completely fine to take a break during class. If you need to leave early, please let me know beforehand. Feel free to step out of the room quietly if needed.
11. I'm a beginner. Which class is best for me?
Both classes are fine for all levels- maybe give them both a try and see which one you prefer.
12. Can I practice Ashtanga if I’m not very flexible?
Absolutely! Flexibility comes with time and consistent practice. Ashtanga focuses on building strength and mobility, not just flexibility. As long as you listen to your body and work within your current range of motion, you'll see progress.
